It was headed by Aleksandar Vučić, who resigned as president on 27 September 2026 to run for prime minister. In the parliamentary election of 25 October 2026 the list came second, behind the Student List, with 39.1% of ballots cast (electoral commission count of 26 October); the final CeSID/Ipsos projection gives it 103 of 250 seats.
History
Tomislav Nikolić and Aleksandar Vučić founded the SNS in 2008 as a split from the Serbian Radical Party. It came to power in 2012 with the Socialist Party of Serbia; Vučić became prime minister in 2014 and president in 2017, and Miloš Vučević has chaired the party since 2023. In December 2023 its list took 48.1% of the valid votes. From late 2024 it faced the student-led protests that followed the Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse. Vučić called the early election on 9 September 2026, and the party renamed its list and nominated him as its candidate for prime minister; the Socialists ran on a list of their own. On election night Vučić conceded, saying it was clear his list had lost, put it at about 105 seats and said the SNS would show 'what opposition is'. Its defeat ended 14 years of SNS rule.
Positions
Wikipedia describes the SNS as populist and catch-all, placed from the centre to the far right, with labels including national populism, Serbian nationalism and neoliberalism; it is an associate member of the European People's Party. On election night Vučić called the result the 'verification of a revolution' carried out with the support of European countries and the 'American deep state', adding that the party was used to opposition. On 26 October party president Miloš Vučević said the SNS respected the people's will but feared for Serbia, promised a 'very combative' parliamentary group and announced a Presidency session to choose new people for some posts and prepare for new elections. Ana Brnabić, acting head of state and deputy head of the party's Main Board, said the SNS would be a 'fierce opposition' fighting by democratic means, and predicted that the new government would impose sanctions on Russia.
Controversies
Presenting the international observers' preliminary conclusions on 26 October 2026, the head of the OSCE short-term observation mission said the election was held amid deep polarisation and on unequal terms. In his words, the chance of fair competition was seriously undermined, as the ruling party gained an advantage from the misuse of state resources and from intimidation of and pressure on voters, candidates and civil society.
