A war correspondent of the state broadcaster RTS in the 1990s, he has sat in the National Assembly since 2012, chaired its Committee on Kosovo and Metohija and now chairs its Defence and Internal Affairs Committee. He was 77th on the list Aleksandar Vučić – United Serbia, which came second in the Serbian parliamentary election of 25 October 2026.
Career
Born in Vranje, Drecun grew up in Surdulica and graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade in 1981. He started at Narodna armija, the Yugoslav People's Army magazine later renamed Vojska, and from 1993 until the end of the Kosovo war in 1999 was a war correspondent for RTS, reporting from Croatia and Bosnia. He has written books on the Kosovo war, among them "The Second Battle of Kosovo" and "Kosmet Legend", and one on global terrorism, "Allah's Warriors". A member of the Socialist Party of Serbia from 1996, he founded the Serbian Revival party in 2000 and won 0.54% as its presidential candidate in 2004. He joined the SNS in 2011 and has been an MP since 2012. He chairs the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee and heads Serbia's delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
Positions
As chair of the Kosovo committee he said in 2018 that its working group had given the Kosovo Specialist Prosecutor a database of crimes which he said the Kosovo Liberation Army had committed, and that more than 460 potential witnesses had been heard in Serbia; he also said he had seen President Vučić tell foreign officials that Serbia would never recognise Kosovo, even at the price of EU membership. In August 2025 he called the Belgrade–Priština dialogue pointless until a new government was formed in Priština. In June 2026, after the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office said it had found documents about the "sound cannon" that protesters said was used at the protest in Belgrade on 15 March 2025, he said an organised group had sought "to overthrow the constitutional order", possibly guided by people with experience of "so-called colour revolutions".
Controversies
The European Platform for Democratic Elections, a network of election monitors, lists Drecun among the foreign observers it calls politically biased at Russia's presidential election of 2018, which he observed as an SNS member of the Serbian parliament.
