It is headed by party president Bálint Pásztor. In the parliamentary election of 25 October 2026 it won 0.81% of ballots cast (electoral commission count of 26 October), losing nearly half of its 2023 vote; the latest CeSID/Ipsos projection gives it two seats, down from six.

History

József Kasza founded the VMSZ in Senta in 1994; it joined the Democratic Opposition of Serbia in 2000, was led by István Pásztor from 2008, and elected Bálint Pásztor president in March 2024. It has backed SNS-led coalitions since 2014 under an agreement renewed after each election, and won six seats with 64,747 votes in December 2023. In 2026 it ran as the only Hungarian list, number 5 on the ballot, under the slogan 'Slogom do uspeha' ('Together to success'), aiming for the five MPs needed for a parliamentary group of its own. With about 34,750 votes in the count of 26 October it lost some 30,000 votes; CeSID/Ipsos projected three seats on election night and two in their latest figures. Pásztor said it had 'survived' a referendum-like atmosphere and was the third or fourth force in parliament, while large Belgrade-based parties would be left out after 35 years.

Positions

Wikipedia describes the VMSZ as a centre-right, conservative and regionalist party of the Hungarian minority, pro-Western and an associate member of the European People's Party; it has promoted Hungarian regional autonomy in northern Vojvodina and has had close ties with Viktor Orbán. Its 2026 programme backed faster and more transparent EU integration, the rule of law, media freedom and minority protection, and Pásztor named the preservation of Hungarian-language schooling as the main goal. Before the vote he said the party would work with anyone who put the community's priorities into a government programme. Elvira Kovács said the party had helped Fidesz's campaign in Hungary and that trust was being built with Hungary's new government. After the vote Pásztor thanked the losers for accepting the result and said the VMSZ would remain an independent party representing Vojvodina's Hungarians, adding that it remained to be seen how things develop.
