History

The VMSZ was founded in 1994 in Senta by József Kasza and registered as a party in 1995. It won 4 seats in 1997, joined the Democratic Opposition of Serbia that ousted Milošević, won 6 seats in 2000 and fell below the threshold in 2003. István Pásztor led it from 2008 until his death in 2023; since 2010 it has moved towards the Serbian Progressive Party and Fidesz, and it has supported SNS-led coalitions since 2014. It won 9 seats in 2020 and 5 in 2022. Bálint Pásztor, educated at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law (doctorate 2018), became acting leader in October 2023, was elected president in March 2024 with 333 of 335 votes, and chaired the Subotica City Assembly from 2020 to 2024.

Positions

Wikipedia describes the VMSZ as a regionalist, conservative, centre-right and pro-Western party that supports Serbia's accession to the EU and NATO and is an associate member of the European People's Party. It has promoted Hungarian regional autonomy in northern Vojvodina; Bálint Pásztor has advocated decentralisation and a majority-Hungarian district there while denying separatist aims. The party has been aligned with the SNS and with Viktor Orbán's Hungarian government.
