Career

Isărescu graduated from the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies in 1971 and took his doctorate there in 1989 with a thesis on exchange-rate policies. He taught at the Academy from 1975 to 1989, worked at the Institute of International Economics and served in 1990 as economic and monetary affairs secretary at the Romanian embassy in the United States. He has been Governor of the National Bank of Romania from September 1990 to December 1999 and from December 2000 onward, and was Prime Minister between those spells, from December 1999 to December 2000. He is a member of the Trilateral Commission and the Club of Rome and an ex-officio member of the European Systemic Risk Board.
