He was Minister of Transport, Mayor of Bucharest from 2000 to 2004, and President of Romania from 2004 to 2014, then senator and MEP until 2024. He led the People's Movement Party from 2016 to 2018. He is named among the possible contenders for Prime Minister of Romania in 2026.

Career

A graduate of the Naval Institute in 1976, Băsescu was a merchant-marine officer with the state shipper Navrom, a ship captain from 1981 to 1987, and head of its Antwerp agency in 1989. He was Minister of Transport in 1991 to 1992 and 1996 to 2000, deputy for Vaslui from 1992 to 2000, Mayor of Bucharest from 2000 to 2004 and leader of the Democratic Party from 2001 to 2004. He was President of Romania from 2004 to 2014, suspended by parliament in 2007 and 2012 and reinstated after referendums. He was a senator from 2016 to 2019, president of the People's Movement Party in 2016 to 2018 and an MEP from 2019 to 2024.
