Career
Helez graduated in 1988 from the Faculty of Science and Mathematics at the University of Sarajevo and served in the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1993. After the war he worked as a secondary-school teacher. In the SDP BiH he became vice president of its cantonal committee in 2003 and its president in 2005, and since August 2025 he has been the party's deputy president. He sat in the Federation's House of Representatives from 2001 to 2011 and again from 2014 to 2018, was Federation Minister for Veterans and Disabled Veterans from 2011 to 2015, and was a member of the national House of Representatives from 2018 until January 2023, when he became Minister of Defence and Vice-Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
