Izetbegović graduated in architecture at Sarajevo in 1981 and directed the Construction Institute of Sarajevo Canton from 1991 to 2003. A member of the SDA since 1990, he joined its presidency in 2002 and became party president in 2014. He sat in the House of Representatives from 2006 to 2010 and held the Bosniak Presidency seat from 2010 to 2018, chairing it four times. He took 35% in 2010 and 32.8% in 2014, and lost in 2022 with 37.3% to Denis Bećirović. He sat in the House of Peoples from 2019 to 2023.
