Walz worked as a teacher and football coach before entering politics. He represented Minnesota's 1st congressional district in the US House from 2007 to 2019 and has been Governor of Minnesota, for the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party, since 2019. Kamala Harris chose him as her running mate on 6 August 2024, and the Harris–Walz ticket lost to Trump and Vance. In September 2025 he announced a run for a third term as governor, then withdrew on 5 January 2026.
