He presented Tucker Carlson Tonight on Fox News from 2016 until April 2023 and now publishes The Tucker Carlson Show independently. He holds no elected office. He is named in the market question on whether he will announce a presidential run before 2027, and has not announced one as of 7 October 2026.
Career
Carlson was born in San Francisco in 1969 and graduated from Trinity College in Connecticut in 1992. He began in print journalism, at Policy Review and then The Weekly Standard from 1995, and wrote for magazines including Esquire and New York. On television he co-hosted CNN's Crossfire until CNN declined to renew his contract in January 2005, then hosted a nightly show on MSNBC until 2008. He co-founded the website The Daily Caller in 2010. At Fox News he became an analyst in 2009 and launched Tucker Carlson Tonight in 2016. Fox and Carlson parted ways on 24 April 2023, and he has since run his own interview show.
Positions
Wikipedia describes a shift over his career from economic libertarianism towards protectionism and restricting immigration, and says he renounced his earlier support for the Iraq War in 2004. It records that he was registered as a Democrat from 2006 to 2020 and as a Republican from 2020 to 2026. In June 2026 he said on the Can't Be Censored podcast that he was "out" of the Republican Party, which he said he no longer supported, calling the Iran war "immoral" and criticising the Trump administration's alliance with Israel, according to the Washington Times and other outlets. In February 2024 he interviewed Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Controversies
In April 2023 Fox Corporation agreed to pay about $787 million to settle a defamation suit by Dominion Voting Systems over false claims about the 2020 election aired on Fox programmes, among them Tucker Carlson Tonight, according to NPR and other outlets. The settlement is Fox's; Carlson was not a party to it. His last show aired on 21 April 2023 and Fox announced his departure on 24 April, less than a week after the settlement. Reports at the time linked the two events in time without Fox stating a cause.
