Career

Buttigieg graduated from Harvard in 2004 and, as a Rhodes Scholar, from Oxford in 2007, then worked as a McKinsey consultant from 2007 to 2010. He lost the 2010 race for Indiana State Treasurer with 37.5% of the vote, then won the South Bend mayoralty in 2011 with 74% and was re-elected in 2015 with 80%. He served in the Navy Reserve from 2009 to 2017, including seven months in Afghanistan in 2014. In 2020 he won the Iowa caucuses, finished second in New Hampshire and ended his campaign on 1 March. He was Transportation Secretary from 2021 to 2025.
