Cruz clerked at the U.S. Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court in 1995 to 1997, advised the Bush campaign in 1999, was Associate Deputy Attorney General from 2001 to 2003 and Texas Solicitor General from 2003 to 2008, then worked at the law firm Morgan Lewis & Bockius until 2012. He won his Senate seat in 2012 with 56.4 percent, was re-elected in 2018 over Beto O'Rourke by 50.9 to 48.3 percent and won a third term in 2024 with 53.1 percent over Colin Allred.
