Born in Chicago in 1964, Obama graduated from Princeton University in 1985 and Harvard Law School in 1988. She worked as an associate at the law firm Sidley Austin, where she met Barack Obama, and later held posts at the University of Chicago and its Medical Center, including vice president for community and external affairs. As First Lady from 2009 to 2017 she led initiatives including Let's Move! on childhood obesity (2010), Reach Higher, Let Girls Learn and Joining Forces for military families. She campaigned for her husband in 2008 and 2012 and for Hillary Clinton in 2016. Her books include the 2018 memoir Becoming and The Light We Carry (2022).
