Career

Thune graduated from Biola University (BA, 1983) and earned an MBA at the University of South Dakota (1984). He worked as an aide to Senator James Abdnor, was executive director of the South Dakota Republican Party from 1989 to 1991, state Railroad Director from 1991 to 1993 and head of the South Dakota Municipal League from 1993 to 1996. He served in the House from 1997 to 2003 and entered the Senate in 2005 after defeating Democratic leader Tom Daschle. In the Senate he was Republican Conference chair from 2012 to 2019, Majority Whip from 2019 to 2021 and Minority Whip from 2021 to 2025, before his election as Majority Leader in January 2025.
