He has been Governor of Texas since January 2015, after serving as a Texas Supreme Court justice and as Texas Attorney General from 2002 to 2015. He is named in the Presidential Election Winner 2028 race, due on 7 November 2028, as a possible contender.

Abbott practised law at Butler and Binion from 1984 to 1992, was a state trial judge in Houston from 1992 to 1995, and sat on the Texas Supreme Court from 1996 to 2001. He was Texas Attorney General from 2002 to 2015, the longest-serving in the state's history, and has been the 48th Governor of Texas since 20 January 2015.
