Career
Nthatisi was a member of the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, during apartheid, and by 2020 was secretary-general of the MK Council. The ANC nominated him in January 2023 as one of three candidates to replace Mxolisi Siyonzana as Mangaung mayor after the party removed Siyonzana over service delivery, and its national executive chose him in March 2023. He was sworn in as councillor on 28 March 2023, elected acting executive mayor on 26 April 2023 with 50 of 93 votes, and became permanent mayor on 13 October 2023 after an earlier election was challenged in court.
