A non-party expert who has said he has no political ambitions, he entered an election for the first time in 2026. He was 27th on the Student List – Students Win, which won the most votes in the Serbian parliamentary election of 25 October 2026.
Career
Šoškić graduated from the Belgrade Faculty of Economics in 1989 as the university's best student of his year, took a master's degree in 1993 and a doctorate in finance in 1999, and rose to full professor there, teaching financial markets, securities, economic statistics and risk analysis. A Fulbright scholar, he lectured at several US universities. He advised the National Bank of Yugoslavia on financial markets (2000–2002) and chaired the Council of the National Bank of Serbia. In 2010 the coalition government of Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković nominated him as governor, citing his expertise and that he belonged to no party, and parliament elected him on 28 July 2010. He resigned in August 2012 over amendments to the central bank law that he said would undermine the bank's independence; Jorgovanka Tabaković succeeded him.
Positions
Campaigning in September 2026, Šoškić told N1 that public debt had grown by €28 billion since 2012 while Serbia fell further behind Central and Eastern Europe in output per head. He called for a knowledge-based economy built on investment in technology, education and science, opposed selling farmland to foreigners and privatising strategic research institutes, called for support for farmers, and said the Novi Sad canopy collapse showed a total failure of the system and that the students' demands deserve universal support. He also called for restoring freedom of information and keeping those who systematically spread disinformation out of the media.
Controversies
His record as governor became a campaign theme. On 7 October 2026 caretaker finance minister Siniša Mali said the dinar had fallen from 94 to 118 to the euro during Šoškić's term and that average pay was then €360 (Večernje novosti). 021.rs, citing Danas, reported Aleksandar Vučić saying that Šoškić would be made prime minister only to ruin the dinar again. Šoškić told N1 that the tabloid claims were lies that attacked his lifelong principles.
