History

The party began in 1933 as the British Columbia section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and took the New Democratic Party name in 1961. After the 2017 election John Horgan formed a minority government backed by the Greens, and in 2020 the party won a record 57 seats. David Eby became leader in 2022 and the party won a narrow majority of 47 seats in 2024. The Greens declined to renew their cooperation agreement in February 2026.
