Kristersson studied economics at Uppsala University. He chaired the Moderate Youth League from 1988 to 1992 and sat in the Riksdag from 1991 to 2000. He was finance mayor in Strängnäs from 2002 to 2006 and a vice mayor of Stockholm from 2006 to 2010, then Minister for Social Security from 2010 to 2014. He returned to the Riksdag in 2014, became Moderate leader in October 2017 and Prime Minister in October 2022.
