Sánchez studied at the Escorial-Maria Christina university centre, the Université libre de Bruxelles and IESE, and took a doctorate in economics in 2012. He was a Madrid city councillor from 2004 to 2009 and a deputy in the Congress from 2009 to 2011 and 2013 to 2016. He led the PSOE from 2014 to 2016 and again from 2017. He has been Prime Minister since 2018: the PSOE won the most votes in November 2019 and formed a coalition with Unidas Podemos, and in 2023 it came second yet formed a coalition government again.
