Controversies

On 16 June 2026 the first panel of the Supreme Federal Court unanimously convicted him of coercion in the course of proceedings, finding that his political activity in the United States pressured the court during the trial of his father for an attempted coup. It set four years and two months in a semi-open regime and a fine, and declared him ineligible for eight years after the sentence. The conviction is not final and internal appeals remain possible. In 2019 he said a new AI-5, the dictatorship-era decree, might be needed if left-wing radicalisation grew, which drew criticism from several parties.
