Reference works place it centre-right to right-wing. Led by chair Cheng Li-wun, it holds 52 of 113 Legislative Yuan seats and is the candidate-naming party of the Taipei mayor. It is named in the 2026 Taiwanese local elections party contest, held on 28 November 2026.

History

Sun Yat-sen founded the Revive China Society in Honolulu in 1894, and in 1919 it was reorganised in Shanghai as the Kuomintang. Under Chiang Kai-shek it unified much of mainland China and governed as the sole ruling party until it lost the civil war to the communists and retreated to Taiwan in 1949. The party is the largest in the Pan-Blue Coalition. After the 2024 legislative election it holds 52 of the 113 seats in the Legislative Yuan, making it the largest single party there. Its chair is Cheng Li-wun and its secretary-general Lee Chien-long.

Positions

Wikipedia describes the party as centre-right to right-wing, built on Sun Yat-sen's Three Principles of the People (nationalism, democracy, people's livelihood), with anti-communism and Chinese conservatism among its traditions. On cross-strait relations it opposes both unification with the People's Republic of China and formal Taiwanese independence, supports the status quo and accepts the 1992 Consensus on 'one China', which it interprets ambiguously. It is the main opposition to the Democratic Progressive Party and has an electoral partnership with the Taiwan People's Party in local races.
