History

The party was founded on 23 April 1889 and joined the Second International. Left-wing members split off in 1917 to form what became the Left Party. Hjalmar Branting led it from 1907 to 1925 and Per Albin Hansson from 1925 to 1946. It governed from 1936 to 1976 and almost continuously from 1982 to 2006. Magdalena Andersson became its first female chair in 2021. It won 30.3 percent and 107 of 349 seats in 2022, and 28.02 percent and 99 seats in 2026, according to Wikipedia.

Positions

Wikipedia describes the party as centre-left and social democratic, standing for freedom, equality and solidarity, with progressive taxation, welfare provision, egalitarianism and a social-corporatist role for capital and labour. After losing the 2022 election it was in opposition to the right-wing cabinet of Ulf Kristersson while remaining Sweden's largest party.
