The party was founded on 20 March 1964 in response to the removal of religious education from schools. It has joined three centre-right coalitions: under Carl Bildt (1991 to 1994), Fredrik Reinfeldt (2006 to 2014) and Ulf Kristersson (since 2022). Its best result was 11.7 percent and 42 seats in 1998; it took 6.3 percent in 2018 and 5.3 percent and 22 seats in 2022. Ebba Busch has led it since 2015.
