USR grew out of the Save Bucharest Union, a civic movement led by the mathematician Nicușor Dan, and was founded on 21 August 2016. Its leaders have been Nicușor Dan (2016–2017), Dan Barna (2017–2021), Dacian Cioloș (2021–2022), Cătălin Drulă (2022–2024), Elena Lasconi (2024–2025) and, since 2025, Dominic Fritz, who was elected with 67.2% of internal support. In the 2024 legislative election it won 12.40% of the Chamber vote and finished fourth. Wikipedia lists it with 40 Chamber and 19 Senate seats and as part of the coalition with PNL and UDMR from June 2025.
