PSD

Sorin Grindeanu leads it. Reference works place it in the centre-left. It holds 91 Chamber and 35 Senate seats, left the government in April 2026 and is named in the question of whether it will be in the next government.

History

PSD began as the Democratic Front of National Salvation (FDSN), a 1992 breakaway from the National Salvation Front. It merged into the Party of Social Democracy in Romania in 1993 and took its present name in 2001 after merging with the Romanian Social Democratic Party. It governed in 1992–1996, 2000–2004, 2014–2015 and 2017–2019 and took part in coalitions in 2008–2009 and 2012–2014. Founder Ion Iliescu was President twice. Sorin Grindeanu leads it, with Claudiu Manda as secretary-general.

Positions

Wikipedia describes PSD as centre-left social democratic, though analysts call it pragmatic and syncretic, with conservative values, liberal economic policy and left-leaning rhetoric. It supports EU and NATO membership and opposes recognising same-sex marriage. In April 2026 it left the Bolojan government over austerity and, with AUR, tabled the motion that brought it down on 5 May 2026; in the 30 September 2026 confidence vote it attended but did not vote.
