Career

Belmont founded the television network Red Bicolor de Comunicaciones (Channel 11) and became known on air as "El Hermanón". He entered politics as an independent and won the Lima mayoralty in 1989, taking office in 1990, and was re-elected in 1993. In 1995 he ran for president and received 2.58% of the vote. He failed in a 2006 congressional run but took a Lima seat in Congress in 2009 after the death of Alberto Andrade, serving until 2011.
