Career

Urresti was born on 25 August 1956 and retired from the army as a brigadier general. He served as Minister of the Interior from 23 June 2014 to 17 February 2015. He has belonged to Podemos Perú since 2018. That year he came second in the Lima mayoral race with 19.7 per cent. In 2020 he was elected to Congress for Lima, receiving the most votes of any candidate nationally (588,763), and he sat from March 2020 to July 2021. He was temporarily disqualified as a presidential candidate in February 2021 and reinstated two weeks later. In the 2022 Lima mayoral election he narrowly lost, with 25.35 per cent against the winner's 26.34 per cent. In 2026 he stood again for the mayoralty, and Wikipedia reports 8.01 per cent for him in that vote.
