A banker and businessman who studied philosophy at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he was Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014 and Atiku Abubakar's running mate in 2019. He was the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate and now belongs to the Nigeria Democratic Congress. He is the NDC's candidate for President of Nigeria in the 2027 election.

Career

Obi graduated in philosophy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1984 and worked as a banker and businessman before turning to politics full-time after the 2003 election. He became Governor of Anambra State in March 2006 for the All Progressives Grand Alliance. He was impeached in November 2006 and replaced by his deputy, and a court reinstated him in 2007. He was re-elected in 2010 and left office in March 2014. In 2019 he was running mate to Atiku Abubakar on the People's Democratic Party ticket, which came second to Muhammadu Buhari. He joined the Labour Party in 2022 and ran for President in 2023 with Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed. Bola Tinubu won, and Obi came third with about 6.1 million votes. He joined the African Democratic Congress on 31 December 2025 and resigned from it on 2 May 2026, then joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The party announced him as its unopposed 2027 presidential candidate in May 2026, and he named former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate.

Positions

Obi presents his message as one of frugality, prudence and accountability in government; Wikipedia describes his movement as populist. He criticises the economic record of President Tinubu's government, citing the weaker naira and rising living costs, and he opposes tax measures he sees as burdening the poor. He has urged a pause in newly gazetted tax laws over reported drafting errors. He treats education and health as government priorities. He blames the government for insecurity and criticised the arrest of university students who protested about it. Kwankwaso has said Obi signed written commitments to serve a single four-year term, and Kwankwaso described these as providing for the presidency to return to the north in 2031. Wikipedia lists the NDC's ideologies as Pan-Africanism, civic nationalism and federalism.

Controversies

In October 2021 the Pandora Papers leak led Nigerian media to report that Obi held offshore companies he had not declared to the Code of Conduct Bureau while governor. The Will reported that he kept managing a UK company for 14 months after taking office. The Will also reported that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invited him for questioning on 27 October 2021, citing an unnamed EFCC source who called the leak a lead. Obi says he resigned from the companies before taking office and broke no law. The sources consulted report no charge and no final finding. In April 2023 an audio recording attributed to Obi, in which he called the election a religious war, circulated; Obi called it fake, and Wikipedia says his spokesman later confirmed it was authentic.
