He studied political science and criminology at Victoria University of Wellington, has been MP for Remutaka (formerly Rimutaka) since 2008, served as Prime Minister from January to November 2023, and has been Leader of the Opposition since. Hipkins worked as a policy advisor and training manager before entering Parliament in 2008 for the Rimutaka seat, later renamed Remutaka. In the Labour government of 2017-2023 he was Minister of Education, Minister for the Public Service and Leader of the House. In 2020 he was briefly Minister of Health and then Minister for COVID-19 Response until 2022, and in 2022-2023 Minister of Police. He succeeded Jacinda Ardern as Labour leader and Prime Minister in January 2023, and led Labour into the October 2023 election, which it lost.
