Reference works place it in the centre to centre-right. It led the government from 2021 to 2026 under Aziz Akhannouch and has been chaired since February 2026 by Mohamed Chaouki. It is named in the race for the largest party in Morocco's 2026 legislative election, held on 23 September 2026, in which it won 66 of 395 seats.

History

Ahmed Osman, a former prime minister, founded the RNI on 28 November 1978. Its later presidents include Mustapha Mansouri (2002 to 2010), Salaheddine Mezouar (2010 to 2016) and Aziz Akhannouch, who led it from 2016. In the House of Representatives the party won 37 seats in 2016 and 102 seats in 2021, becoming the largest party, and Akhannouch headed the government from September 2021. Akhannouch declined a further term and an extraordinary congress in El Jadida on 7 February 2026 elected Mohamed Chaouki, born in 1977 and a former finance committee chair and group leader in the House, as president. In the election of 23 September 2026 the RNI won 66 seats, according to the Interior Ministry's confirmed results, second behind the Authenticity and Modernity Party with 97, ahead of Istiqlal with 65 and the Justice and Development Party with 54.

Positions

Wikipedia describes the RNI as centre to centre-right and as a pragmatic, managerially minded catch-all party. It says the party claims social-democratic credentials while advocating economic liberalism, a market economy and a stronger private sector. Wikipedia also notes that critics call it a party of the bourgeoisie, because businesspeople and executives are prominent among its members.
