Wikipedia describes it as centre-right, conservative and monarchist. It won 81 of 395 seats in 2021 and has been in the coalition government led by Aziz Akhannouch since then. It is named in the Morocco legislative election of 23 September 2026.

History

Former members of the Moroccan Action Committee, among them Ahmed Balafrej and Allal al-Fassi, founded Istiqlal in 1943 and published the Independence Manifesto on 11 January 1944. Its left wing split in 1959 to form the National Union of Popular Forces. Its leaders have been Balafrej (1943–1960), al-Fassi (1960–1974), M'hamed Boucetta (1974–1998), Abbas El Fassi (1998–2012), Hamid Chabat (2012–2017) and Nizar Baraka (2017 on). It won 52 seats in 2007, 60 in 2011, 46 in 2016 and 81 in 2021, with 16.87% of the vote that year.

Positions

Wikipedia places Istiqlal on the centre-right and calls it conservative and monarchist, advocating an egalitarianism rooted in reformist Salafism and not in the liberal or socialist tradition. Since 2021 it has been a member of the coalition government led by Aziz Akhannouch.
