History

Maarouf Saad, a Sunni Muslim politician and member of parliament, formed the organization in 1973. Its military wing, the National Liberation Army, fought from 1975 to 1990 with roughly 500 to 1,000 fighters, backed by Fatah, Libya and later the businessman Rafic Hariri, and took part in the civil war as part of the Lebanese National Movement. It initially joined the March 8 Alliance but changed its support during the 2019 protests. Osama Saad leads it.
