Wikipedia describes it as centre-right to right-wing, with Lebanese nationalism and Christian democracy as its ideology. It is in opposition and holds four of the 128 parliamentary seats. It is named in the market for the most seats in the 2026 Lebanese parliamentary election.
History
Pierre Gemayel founded the party in 1936 as a Maronite paramilitary youth organisation, and Wikipedia says he modelled it on European fascist parties after the 1936 Berlin Olympics; it later moved towards Christian democracy. In the civil war of 1975 to 1990 it was, in Wikipedia's words, the most important force in the Christian camp. Its militia was responsible for several massacres, including Sabra and Shatila in 1982. Bachir Gemayel was elected president in 1982 and assassinated before taking office. The party took part in the Cedar Revolution of 2005.
Positions
Wikipedia describes the party as centre-right to right-wing, stressing Lebanese nationalism and Christian democracy, and part of the Lebanese opposition. In 2018 it unveiled a platform that, Wikipedia says, supported decriminalising homosexuality and a female quota in parliament.
