Bertrand began as an insurance agent and entered politics young. He was a National Assembly member for Aisne from 2002 to 2016, Minister of Health (2005-2007), Minister of Labour (2007-2009 and 2010-2012), Secretary-General of the UMP (2008-2010) and Mayor of Saint-Quentin (2010-2016). He beat Marine Le Pen in the 2015 regional election and won Hauts-de-France again in 2021 with 52.37%. He left The Republicans in 2017, ran as an independent, and rejoined in 2021, finishing fourth in its 2021 presidential nomination race.
