Retailleau graduated from Sciences Po in 1985 and worked in local radio and a communications school. He was a Vendée councillor from 1988 to 2015, National Assembly deputy (1994-1997), Senator from 2004, president of the Republicans' Senate group (2014-2024), head of the Vendée council (2010-2015) and of the Pays de la Loire region (2015-2017). He was Minister of the Interior from 2024 to 2025 and in May 2025 won the party presidency with 76% against Laurent Wauquiez.
