She was the Socialist candidate in the 2007 presidential election and lost the run-off to Nicolas Sarkozy. She last held office as Minister of Ecology (2014-2017). She announced on 10 July 2026 that she would enter the Socialist-camp primary for the 2027 presidential election.
Career
A graduate of Sciences Po and the École nationale d'administration, Royal was an administrative judge and adviser to President Mitterrand. She was a National Assembly member, Minister of Environment (1992-1993), school and family minister (1997-2002), President of the Poitou-Charentes region (2004-2014) and Minister of Ecology (2014-2017), then ambassador for the polar regions until 2020. In 2007 she won the Socialist nomination and reached the run-off with 47%. She lost the 2008 party leadership vote narrowly and took 6.95% in the 2011 primary.
- President of the Regional Council of Poitou-Charentes 2004–2014
- Member of the French National Assembly 1988–1992, 1993–1997, 2002–2007
Positions
Her 2026 launch stressed the climate emergency and applying the COP21 decisions, education, health, public safety, zero tolerance of violence against children and restoring France's role as a mediating power. Her slogan echoes her 2007 one, 'peaceful France and just order'. She said the risk of the far right reaching power drove her decision. Earlier platforms included a minimum wage of 1,500 euros.
