He announced on 19 December 2025 that he is a candidate in the 2027 French presidential election. He is named in the race for who will be on its ballot.
Career
Branco stood for the Greens in the 2008 local elections, worked on François Hollande's 2012 campaign and completed a PhD in international law in 2014. He was legal adviser to WikiLeaks and Julian Assange from 2015 to 2019, was admitted to the bar in 2017, and ran unsuccessfully for La France Insoumise in the 2017 legislative elections. In 2018 he defended Yellow Vest protesters without fee. He was detained for two nights in Senegal in August 2023 over his support for opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.
Controversies
In October 2024 the Paris Bar suspended him for three years, of which 2.25 were suspended, for publishing confidential case details. A woman accused him of rape in 2021 and two other women made allegations in 2023. On 6 August 2026 the Paris prosecutor asked for him to be sent to trial for rape in the 2021 complaint and for the other complaints to be dismissed. He denies the allegation, and the investigating judge decides whether a trial is held.
