Roussel trained as a journalist and worked as a reporter for France 3 in the Ardennes before becoming an adviser in the Jospin government era. He was elected to the National Assembly for Nord's 20th constituency in 2017 and lost the seat to a National Rally candidate in 2024. He leads the Communist Party and became mayor of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux in 2025. In 2022 he took 2.28% and finished eighth in the presidential election.
