LaPointe was born on 12 December 1957 in Toronto and earned a journalism degree at Ryerson. From 1980 he worked at The Canadian Press, where he was a parliamentary reporter and columnist until 1995. He hosted on CBC Newsworld at its 1989 launch, was founding executive editor of the National Post, edited the Hamilton Spectator from 1999, served as CBC ombudsman from 2010 and led Glacier Media's newsroom from 2020 to 2024. As the Non-Partisan Association's nominee in 2014 he took 40 per cent (73,443 votes) in Vancouver, behind Gregor Robertson's 46 per cent.
