He has been Secretary-General of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) since October 2016 and holds degrees in social communication and a doctorate in economics. He was the PCB's candidate for President of Brazil in the 2026 election.

Career

Costa took a degree in social communication in 1974 and a doctorate in economics in 1992. He joined the PCB in the 1970s and wrote for its publication Voz da Unidade in the 1980s. He ran for mayor of São Paulo in 2008 and was the party's vice-presidential candidate in 2010, with 39,136 votes (0.04%). He became the party's 13th Secretary-General in October 2016, works as research director of the Instituto Caio Prado Júnior and has written seven books on imperialism, wage policy, globalisation and the Brazilian crisis.
