Who is running
Nominations closed at 5 p.m. on 2 November 2026, the deadline set by the Office of the FSM National Election, the national electoral authority. It had not published a list of candidates on its website when this article was written. The Federated States of Micronesia has no political parties: every member of Congress is an independent.
In the 2023 general election, 29 candidates stood for the 14 seats: 11 for the four state senator seats and 18 for the district seats. The president, Wesley Simina, was the senator for the state of Chuuk before Congress elected him president on 11 May 2023.
How the vote works
Congress is the country's one-chamber national parliament. Each of the four states, Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap, elects one senator at large for four years. The other 10 members, elected for two years, represent single-member districts: five in Chuuk, three in Pohnpei and one each in Kosrae and Yap. The candidate with the most votes wins each seat.
In 2023, polling stations in the country were open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voters abroad can use special polling places in Guam and Honolulu, which by law stay open from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on election day; the one in Honolulu closes last. Voters must be registered by 31 January 2027.
How the race got here
The four senators were last elected on 7 March 2023, for four years, so their seats are on the ballot again in 2027 together with the district seats. On 11 May 2023, during the first regular session of the 23rd Congress, members chose Wesley Simina as president.
The National Election Office approved the timetable for this vote on 5 March 2026. Requests for postal ballots opened on 3 October 2026 and close on 21 January 2027.

Congress elects the president for four years by a majority of all its members. The president must be a member of Congress elected for a four-year term, which makes the choice one of the four state senators. The vice-president is chosen the same way and may not come from the same state. A president may serve no more than two consecutive terms.
After the president and vice-president are elected, their seats in Congress are declared vacant. In 2023, the members-elect were sworn in on 11 May.
