Who is running

Dickon Mitchell, an attorney, has been prime minister since June 2022. He leads the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the governing party, and asks voters to keep his team in government. He says his government freed more goods from value added tax (VAT), a tax on sales, after it took office.

Emmalin Pierre leads the New National Party (NNP), the main opposition party. She became its leader in 2024 and is the first woman to lead it into a general election. The NNP pledges to remove VAT from sugar and electricity and to reverse a new levy on water within its first 90 days in office.

Peter David, a former foreign affairs minister, launched the Democratic People's Movement (DPM) in November 2025. It is also expected to contest the 15 seats.

How the vote works

Voters elect the 15 members of the House of Representatives. Each constituency elects one member. A party needs at least 8 seats for a majority and to form the government.

Polling stations open at 6 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. local time, as at earlier general elections. Police officers vote on a special polling day, 2 November. Voter registration closed on 2 October.

How the race got here

The NDC won 9 of the 15 seats in the general election of 23 June 2022 and defeated the NNP of Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, the party's founder, who is not related to Dickon Mitchell. Keith Mitchell left active politics on 1 October 2026 after 42 years in Parliament.

Governor-General Cécile La Grenade dissolved Parliament on 2 October 2026 on the prime minister's advice. On 4 October Dickon Mitchell announced the date of the vote at the NDC's campaign launch. The constitutional deadline for an election was October 2027.

On 5 October Pierre challenged Mitchell to a national debate, which he had also called for. On 8 October the Office of the Attorney General said that a claim before the High Court challenges certain aspects of the electoral process, and that it is satisfied the process follows the constitution and the law.
