Career

Hanso studied special needs education and law at the University of Tartu, Chinese at Sichuan University and Asian politics, earning an MA in 2005. He worked as a journalist, then as adviser at the Ministry of Defence (2005-2007) and to the Finance Minister (2007-2009), in the EU diplomatic service in China and Mongolia (2009-2011) and as a researcher at the International Centre for Defence and Security. He was mayor of Kuressaare from 2013 to 2015, a member of the Riigikogu in 2015 and Minister of Defence from September 2015 to November 2016. He has been ambassador to China since 2022.
