Elected to council in 2018, she was the British Columbia New Democratic Party's candidate in Columbia River-Revelstoke in the 2020 provincial election and lost the 2022 mayoral election to Gary Sulz. She is not among the three candidates for mayor of Revelstoke in the general local election of 17 October 2026.

Career

Cherlet was raised and studied sciences on the Prairies, worked as a teacher and backcountry guide and settled in Revelstoke in 2008. She owned the business Big Mountain Kitchen, which she closed in 2022 citing supply lines, and was president of the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce and active in the Revelstoke Local Food Initiative. She was elected to city council in 2018. In the provincial election of October 2020 she stood for the BC New Democratic Party in Columbia River-Revelstoke and came second with 5,708 votes, 39 per cent, behind the BC Liberal incumbent Doug Clovechok with 7,034. In October 2022 she ran for mayor and received 432 votes, 22.82 per cent, against 1,461 for the incumbent Gary Sulz.

Positions

Running for council in 2018, Cherlet said she wanted to be a voice for small-business owners and to press the provincial and federal governments for help with problems beyond the city's reach. As the New Democrats' candidate in 2020 she backed the government of John Horgan: the four-laning of the Trans-Canada Highway, a rent freeze and a renter's rebate, wider ten-dollar-a-day child care, action on the old-growth review's recommendations and the CleanBC climate plan. Her mayoral platform of 2022 called for sharing information and deciding collaboratively, acting on the Official Community Plan, gentle density, better transport connections, a cultural strategy, workforce development and responsible asset management.
