History
The PSDB grew out of social-democratic opposition to the military dictatorship and was founded in 1988. Cardoso governed as president from 1995 to 2003, and the party's candidates were runners-up in presidential elections from 2002 to 2014 before a sharp decline in 2018 and 2022. In 2022 it won 19 of 513 Chamber seats, 4 of 81 Senate seats and no governorships. Cardoso is honorary president; Aécio Neves has been president as of November 2025.
Positions
Wikipedia says the party began on the centre-left and moved right in the 1990s, embracing neoliberal policy and the Third Way under Cardoso. Its platform names democracy as a fundamental value and rejects populism and authoritarianism, while critics cited by the article say it has come to be dominated by conservative and religious discourse and market fundamentalism.
