History
The party was created on 26 October 2006 by merging the 1985 Liberal Party with PRONA, partly to pass the 5% electoral threshold and distance itself from the Mensalão scandal; it was called the Party of the Republic (PR) until 2019. Originally centre-right and part of the Centrão bloc, it became the largest bloc in Congress after Jair Bolsonaro joined in 2021. In 2022 it won 99 Chamber seats and 13 Senate seats. For 2026 it fields Flávio Bolsonaro for President.
