Stanivuković attended the Faculty of Economics at the University of Banja Luka without graduating, and joined the PDP in 2011. He sat in the Banja Luka City Assembly from 2016 to 2018 and in the National Assembly of Republika Srpska from 2018 to 2020. He was elected mayor of Banja Luka in November 2020 and re-elected in 2024 with 49.5% of the vote. He became PDP president on 15 December 2024.
