Who is running
There are 38 candidates for the 20 House seats. Candidates in American Samoa run without party labels. All 20 sitting members are seeking another term, among them the Speaker of the House, Savali Talavou Ale, who represents the Alataua district and faces one challenger.
Six sitting members face no challenger. The most crowded races are in Manu'a district 1 and Tualauta, where five candidates each compete for two seats.
How the vote works
The House of Representatives and the Senate together form the Fono, the territory's legislature. Voters elect House members by secret ballot in 17 districts; three districts elect two members each. Senators are not chosen by voters: county councils of matai, or chiefly titleholders, select them by Samoan custom.
On the same day, voters choose the territory's delegate to the United States Congress, a non-voting seat in the US House. Six candidates stand, including the incumbent, Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen, a Republican, and Sandra King Young, a Democrat. Polling stations open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. local time.
How the race got here
Candidate filing opened on 15 June 2026 and closed on 1 September 2026. On 3 September, the American Samoa Election Office, the territory's nonpartisan electoral authority, published the list of candidates it deemed eligible. Local absentee voting opened on 7 September.
