Wikipedia places it on the right to far-right. Donald Trump has been President since January 2025 and Joe Gruters chairs the party. It is named in the market on which party wins the 2028 US presidential election.
History
The party was formed in 1854 from the Whig Party, the Free Soil Party and the Anti-Nebraska movement, in opposition to the expansion of slavery under the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Under Abraham Lincoln it led the Union through the Civil War and abolished slavery. It dominated national politics into the early twentieth century, declined during the Great Depression and returned to the White House under Eisenhower in 1952. In 2026 it holds 53 of 100 Senate seats, 218 of 435 House seats and 26 governorships.
Positions
Wikipedia describes the party as right-wing populist and neo-nationalist, and says it has largely shifted towards illiberalism, favouring strong presidential power. Its current leaders are President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Six of the nine Supreme Court justices were appointed by Republican presidents.
